Representative Bicycle & Pedestrian Projects


Consulting

  • Working with the Winston-Salem, NC Department of Transportation to review and advise the department on pedestrian issues and the Safe Routes to School Program.

  • Working with the Association of Pedestrian & Bicycle Professionals on public relations and outreach efforts.

Training

  • Working with North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to train additional facilitators for NC’s Safe Routes to School Program.

  • As nationally certified trainer for Safe Routes to School, co-presented program with Mark Fenton at Arcadia Elementary School in Spartanburg, SC.

  • Presented 2 Pedestrian Safety Roadshow Workshops for city and county staff of the Winston-Salem, NCDOT.

  • Developed the manual and presented training for the North Carolina School Crossing Guard train-the-trainer workshops across North Carolina.

  • Developed one of the first in-school bicycle safety programs in North Carolina, that was taught as part of the physical education curriculum for fourth and fifth grade students at a private school.

Research

  • Worked on a pedestrian program research project for Winston-Salem, NCDOT to study programs in other cities.

  • Researched and wrote text for A Guide to North Carolina Bicycle and Pedestrian Laws with Mary Meletiou at Institute for Transportation Research & Education.

  • Conducted extensive research project on national pedestrian safety education programs and encouragement programs in Boulder, CO and other cities then prepare the report for NC DOT and presented at the national bicycle and pedestrian conference in Washington, DC.

  • Researched and wrote text for 3 county bicycle route maps for NCDOT: Cabarrus, Randolph, and Transylvania Counties.

Marketing & Promotion

  • Coordinated the development and wrote the text for the Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation website: http://www.ncdot.org/transit/bicycle/default.html

  • Organized information and wrote copy for the brochure entitled “Walking in North Carolina” for NCDOT.

  • Served as technical advisor for production of a bike repair video project called “Don’t Get Stuck: Fit It” for NCDOT Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation and 4-H.

  • Developed a state-wide poster contest on bicycle safety for the NC Bicycle Program as a member of the Bicycle Committee.

Leadership & Advocacy

  • Board Member, Association of Pedestrian & Bicycle Professionals

  • Chaired the North Carolina Bicycle Committee within the NC Department of Transportation for six of the eight years on the committee.

  • Served as president of the North Carolina Bicycle Federation in 1990.
