Employee Management

Evolving Project Observers into Project Leaders

By Gregg Schoppman

If you ask seasoned veterans of the construction industry the origin of project managers, they would all agree project managers came about because superintendents hated doing their paperwork. “Construction is about building things, not shuffling paper,” grumbles the stodgy construction curmudgeon.

Court Reverses Verdict Against General Contractor for Injury to Subcontractor’s Worker

The Connecticut Supreme Court on May 20, 2008 reversed a lower court’s jury verdict assessing $3.45 million in damages against a general contractor for injuries suffered by a subcontractor’s employee. In Archambault v. Soneco/Northeastern Inc., Connecticut’s high court found that the trial court improperly prevented the general contractor from showing that negligent conduct of the worker’s employer caused the injuries.

Learning from New York’s Tragic Crane Collapses

March’s spectacular crane disaster that claimed 7 lives and caused untold millions in damage was clearly tragic. Then, while the investigation is underway for that collapse, another crane collapsed on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, leaving at least one person dead and damaging an adjacent high-rise apartment building.

The investigation to piece together the causes and an understanding of what happened in both these tragedies will take months. Meanwhile, a city inspector resigned after his arrest for falsifying business records and offering a false document for filing. The city’s buildings commissioner resigned in April after an outcry over the rising number of these deadly incident.

While we await the outcome of these investigations, those of us in the steel erection industry should ask ourselves what we can learn from these tragedies. What safety steps can we take on job sites to prevent such disasters? How can we best evaluate our equipment, our processes, and our employee and subcontractor training to ensure that our projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget?

SEAA will continue to monitor information from these investigations as well as other regulations and research that can help us all do our jobs more safely. Rest assured that we will share this information with our members as quickly as possible.

Construction Challenge at St. Louis Power House

The Power House, a historic building at 11 th Street and Clark in St. Louis, is being transformed from the inside out as new offices for Cannon Design. The priority is to maintain the historic façade as well as the interior walls. To build a building inside an existing building is similar to building a ship in a bottle. Observers say that general contractor Ross is doing a great job of managing many bits and pieces with regard to the character of the building and protecting its integrity.

Member Spotlight

SEAA congratulates Indusco on 100 years of service to the construction industry. With beginnings in the surplus business, a very popular business in 1908, Indusco is one of very few companies that have survived.

In 1908, 16-year-old Moses Schloss would paddle a small rowboat from ship to ship in the Baltimore harbor, buying used rope by the pound. He recycled the good parts and sent the bad spots to paper plants to be made into newsprint. A week's hard work might generate $10 profit. Ship captains appreciated his efforts and learned to trust him. Thus, the Industrial Sales Company was born.
